Applications of selection for multiple traits in cage-reared Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar)
Selection indices using fry length, percent smolt after 18 months in fresh water (S1), market size and mature size of two-sea-winter Atlantic salmon yielded gains of 0.57 and 0.71 standard deviations on an index scale in the progeny. Summary: | Selection indices using fry length, percent smolt after 18 months in fresh water (S1), market size and mature size of two-sea-winter Atlantic salmon yielded gains of 0.57 and 0.71 standard deviations on an index scale in the progeny. All measured traits increased except smolt rate in the late-run stock. Index selection was applied to a stock, with a high incidence of sexual maturity after one sea winter (grilse), that had demonstrated a positive realized responses to a single generation of mass selection for size. The increase in the second generation progeny performance indicated that genetic gains were cumulative between the first and second generation. |
