Summary: | Toxoplasmic encephalitis (TE) is one of the most frequent and life-threatening opportunistic infections in patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In France, 13.4% of patients with HIV infection present with TE as the first manifestation of AIDS. Its incidence among patients with AIDS is estimated to be 30%-40%; therefore, there is a critical need for prophylaxis for TE. In our first study of TE (C. B. et al., unpublished data), we identified patients at high risk for the infection. Forty-seven (7%) of 650 patients infected with HIV-1 presenting to our institution between June 1987 and June 1991 developed TE. All patients had serum IgG antibodies to Toxoplasma at least 3 months before they developed TE and at the time of TE. IgM antibodies to Toxoplasma were not detected in the serum of any of these patients. CD4 lymphocyte counts during infection with TE were |
