Summary:THE FIRST-EVER REPORT ON gender equality and women's empowerment in the environment has been issued by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The Environment and Gender Index (EGI) ranks 72 countries along 27 dimensions divided into six main categories: 1) ecosystems, 2) gender-based education assets-women with bank accounts and access to land, education and credit; 3) governance-civil liberties, property rights and political activity; 4) country-reported activities-inclusion of gender considerations in United Nations conventions/treaties and processes; 5) livelihood-fewer women in poverty, improved access to water and sanitation, food adequacy and fewer women suffering from anemia; and 6) gender-based rights and participation-equal legal rights, women in policy-making positions, women managers.
