Description
Summary:Peyami Safa is not only an eminent novelist of Turkish literature but also an outstanding author of Turkish intellectual history. Although primarily known as a novelist, his oeuvre covers a wide variety of genres from biography to children's literature and thrillers under the pen name "Server Bedi". In the second half of the century, as the Republic reached maturity and the chaos in the society settled, Safa concentrated on his intellectual studies. Türk Inkilâbina Bakislar is not only a key study analyzing the notions of East-West and then reaching for a synthesis, but also an important text as it is Safa's first intellectual work. Referred to as "the philosophical monograph of the revolution", it was first published in installments in the newspaper Cumhuriyet and then printed as a book in 1938. It is thought-provoking that a book which was considered so noteworthy was not reprinted for more than twenty years after the publication of its first edition. Safa made numerous changes to the second edition, which was finally published in 1959. This paper scrutinizes the arguments discussed in the above mentioned book with special attention to the passages that were added and removed by the author. These changes that the text has undergone provide us with significant insight regarding Safa's unsteady attitude towards the Kemalist revolution. Reprinted by permission of Ahmet Yesevi University
