Description
Summary:Various neurotransmitters (e.g., norepinephrine, acetylcholine, serotonin) that mobilize intracellular calcium have been shown to elicit cellular responses through a second messenger system involving inositol phospholipids. Current models suggest that receptors for these neurotransmitters are coupled to the enzyme phospholipase C, which stimulates hydrolysis of the phosphoinositides, resulting in the production of 1,2-diacylglycerol (DAG) and inositol phosphates including inositol-1,4,5-trisphosphate (IP sub(3)).
