Description
Summary:The effectiveness of ozone treatment to inactivate Cryptosporidium oocysts, Giardia cysts, poliovirus, and Bacillus subtilis endospores was studied. Spiked Ohio River water was tested, showing that only endospores were more resistant to ozone than Cryptosporidium oocysts. Endospores may be a suitable indicator of microbial treatment efficiency. Inactivation data for treatment of surface waters were similar to those in published benchmarking studies of laboratory water. Ozone requirements for inactivating Cryptosporidium may produce elevated levels of bromate and ozone by-products.
