Summary: | The speciation of carbon and surface tension of a number of radiation fogs were measured in Zurich, Switzerland. C species were dominated by dissolved organic C (DOC), which was typically present at levels of 40-200 mg/l. Less than 10% of the DOC was identified as specific individual organic compounds. Particulate organic C (POC) accounted for 26-41% of the mass of the particles, but usually less than 10% of the TOC mass. The surface tensions of the measured samples were less than pure water and were correlated with their DOC concentrations. The combination of high DOC and POC and low surface tension suggests a mechanism for the concentration of hydrophobic organic contaminants in the fog droplet. |
