Description
Summary:► We measure shielding properties of dwelling houses in the Central Region of Syria. ► The concrete used for ceiling construction is good for shielding from neutrons. ► Fairly high linear attenuation coefficients are obtained (from 0.087 to 0.108cm−1). ► Blocks used for house walls are not efficient against neutrons. ► Blocks efficiency can be improved by filling their holes with a cement paste. Experimentally measured shielding characteristics against neutron radiations of the dwelling houses in the Central Region of Syria (CRS) are displayed and discussed. The concrete used for ceiling construction in this region has very good shielding characteristics against neutrons similar to that used in radiation shielding and nuclear reactors. The linear (mass) attenuation coefficient [L(M)AC] for concrete was found to be 0.097cm−1 (0.046 cm2g−1), while for the blocks used to assess the house walls it was found to be 0.028cm−1. Blocks need to be filled with the cement paste used for assessing the same walls in order to have an acceptable LAC against neutrons.
