Summary:The purpose of this study was to identify the skills found most important to gain patient's trust from a patient's perspective. One hundred and twenty-two patients were surveyed prospectively using a questionnaire assessing professionalism, physical environment, verbal and non-verbal communication skills. Factors required to establish a trusting patient-surgeon relationship were ranked in order of importance before and after initial consultation with a surgeon in a hand surgery clinic model. No significant relationship was identified between gender, age, education or income, and answers provided by respondents. Technical ability, verbal communication skills and respect of patient's autonomy by the physician were found most important. The visit with the surgeon significantly affected the ranking of some of the skills deemed important. Patients view respect of autonomy and verbal communication skills as the most important attributes when developing trust and confidence in a surgeon, followed by technical proficiency. Le but de cette étude était d’identifier les habiletés et qualités jugées les plus importantes pour gagner la confiance du patient selon une perspective de patient. Cent vingt-deux patients ont été interrogés prospectivement en utilisant un questionnaire évaluant le professionnalisme, l’environnement physique, la communication verbale et non-verbale. Les facteurs requis dans l’établissement d’une relation de confiance patient-chirurgien ont été sélectionnés par les patients par ordre d’importance avant et après la consultation initiale avec un chirurgien dans un contexte de consultation de chirurgie de la main. Aucune relation significative n’a pu être identifiée entre le genre, l’âge, l’éducation ou le revenu et les réponses des patients sondés. Les habiletés techniques, les habiletés de communication verbale de même que le respect de l’autonomie du patient par le chirurgien ont été identifiés comme étant les qualités les plus importantes. La consultation par un chirurgien affecte significativement l’importance des qualités et habiletés jugées importantes par les patients. Les patients estiment que le respect de l’autonomie et les habiletés de communication verbale sont les qualités les plus importantes dans le développement d’une relation de confiance avec un chirurgien, suivis par les habiletés techniques.
