Description
Summary:[...]if the real Santa Anna succeeded in writing and publishing (albeit posthumously) an autobiography where his voice reigns unchecked, in Sema's novel we witness Santa Anna attempting to do the same, and ultimately failing in this task. According to Echávarri, Santa Anna was in cahoots with the Spaniards since as soon as they disembarked they attacked only Echávarri 's side of the port while leaving Santa Anna and his troops alone. Echávarri's words prove to be prophetic since shortly afterwards Santa Anna, resentful of Iturbide, rises up against him and ends his brief reign as emperor of Mexico. Besides allowing the voices of famous persons in Mexican history like Echávarri and Iturbide, among many others, to express themselves, the compiler also decides to includes the voices of persons who would otherwise remain in the shadows of historiography. [...]Santa Anna comes across as a crude, comic and unsuccessful lover in his many affairs.
