Summary:According to this view, the truest African Americans are those who have lived the most oppressed, and therefore, most authentic lives. The debates about the attributes of black music, the recent controversies over its putative loss of soul, and the arguments surrounding white performances of black styles-these are all symptoms of a structural contradiction that has historically cast black music in conflicting positions that confuse as they generate meaning today.
