Summary: | The religious and economic importance of the city of Karbala has led to an increase in the number of daily trips taken within it and thus to an increase in the flow of traffic, making it necessary to determine the characteristics of the city’s road network and its most important intersections. This study thus offers an evaluation of the traffic performance of the intersections and urban streets of a study area consisting of five intersections and four urban streets. After the study area was defined, traffic data was collected using video imaging technology, and by dividing the urban streets into several sections, the travel time for all sections and the free flow speeds were calculated. The SIDRA INTERSECTION program was used to analyse and evaluate the intersections, so the roads were evaluated after being classified according to the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) 2000, based on the observed Free-Flow Speed (FFS). Based on the determined average travel speed and v/c ratio, the Level Of Service (LOS) for each segment was thus determined, with results that show that the majority of segments are Class II urban streets; however, the LOS estimated using average travel speed differed slightly from that derived using v/c ratio. It was also found that the intersections have suffered from an increase in the volume of traffic, as the level of service for all intersections was F. |
