Summary: | After house jobs in medicine and surgery, and senior house officer posts in casualty, paediatrics, and obstetrics, James Duncan Donnelly (“Jimmy”) worked in general practice and community paediatrics before going to the Birmingham hospital board and joining the then newly emerging specialty of epidemiology and community medicine. A period in the Scottish home and health department was followed by appointment as a senior lecturer at Dundee University. He designed and ran, for over 20 years, its masters programme in public health. He spent a sabbatical in Australia and undertook several consultancies for the World Health Organisation, working until the age of 67. He served on various BMA committees. In retirement he enjoyed curling, his Robert Burns club, and golf. He often revisited childhood roots in Dumfriesshire. Jimmy leaves his three children and seven grandchildren. His wife, Gwyneth, predeceased him by 20 days. Their ashes are interred together in the mid-Wales church yard where they were married 60 years previously. |
