| Summary: | The paper aims to describe the meanings of the lexeme miłość [love] in the French-Latin-Polish Nowy Wielki Dykcjonarz [New Grand Dictionary] by Pierre Danet and Dymitr Franciszek Kola. The dictionary notes in separate entries the romantic, aromantic (family ties, friendship) and religious (theological virtue) aspects of the lexeme. The dictionary material relating to these three aspects is analysed and described. Special attention was paid to the conceptualisation of miłość as a virtue and its presentation in the context of other virtues noted in the dictionary. The analysis shows that the separation of a religious understanding of love is a peculiarity of the Danet–Kola dictionary. This aspect is rarely used in the general language today. It may be suspected that in the eighteenth-century worldview, the perception of love was more grounded in faith, which influenced the way it was described in the dictionary. |
