Description
Summary:This paper is a review of literature on the impact of discourse on racism. The key areas of focus are politics, media, text and conversation. This work reviewed aspects of Fairclough, Shiffrin and Dijk and incorporates my personal experiences, since my arrival in England in 2001. In exploring the key areas, the issue of power was explored within the context of discourse. The Social Identity Theory and Critical Theory have been used to establish the theoretical framework for this work. Based on the literature reviewed, it is clear that discourse has a direct influence on the construction and deconstruction of racism. It is also clear that racism will always be reproduced based on the nature of discourse.
