Description
Summary:James Arthur O'Connor was born in Dublin in 1792. He grew up in a period that saw the dawning of Romanticism in European art. Caspar David Friedrich was born in 1774, JMW Turner in 1775 and John Constable in 1776. Their careers were well under way when O'Connor began to paint and there is no doubt that his paintings, especially the later ones, were influenced by the fashion for brooding Romantic landscapes. Critics are inclined to divide his output into three distinct phases: the early topographical paintings such as A View of Drimnagh Castle (1821), where he captures specific buildings or scenic areas; the mid-period, where he depicted idealized landscapes with a flavor of the bucolic, such as A Seaside Stroll (1834); and the final phase, where he painted dark landscapes such as Dunleary, Coast of Dublin.
