Description
Summary:This article aims to reflect on the type, nature, and intensity of the relationships between Israeli migrants residing in Mexico and the local Jewish community in light of the concept of conviviality . It first addresses the current academic literature regarding the concept of conviviality as an analytical tool; it then describes some of the elements that characterize the Mexican Jewish community, and proceeds to reveal several findings obtained in a recent doctoral thesis about the Israeli migration to Mexico. Due to their ethnic and national origin, Israeli migrants are supposedly located in a privileged position, for they have the potential to belong to a double diaspora: as Jews, they become part of the local Jewish diaspora, while at the same time join the Israeli community residing abroad, creating an Israeli diaspora in their place of residence. However, despite their alleged privileged position, Israelis living in Mexico do not constitute an Israeli diaspora in itself, nor do they fully align with the local Jewish diaspora, at least not from their subjective experience. They live with and within this community but do not necessarily have a sense of belonging to it. This article focuses on the circumstances that foster or hinder conviviality among both parties, analyzing Jewish/Israeli diaspora relations and offering some reflections on the current and potential dynamics of this encounter.
