Summary: | The trial function approach is a useful technique to modelling soliton solutions for equations that can not be solved exactly. We use the variational approach to find approximate solutions for the dissipative solitons described by the cubic-quintic complex Giinzburg-Landau equation. We find that the evolution equations for the soliton parameters are similar to those derived using the method of moments. The existence of both stationary and pulsating soliton solutions is indicated by both approaches and confirmed through some numerical examples |
