Description
Summary:Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands and enjoys significant economic benefits of tourism estimated at over €8bn per year. However, this needs to be balanced with concern for social, economic and environmental sustainability; the impacts of which are largely undetermined. Recent Balearic government reports and statistics tend to focus on the economic impact of tourism (Govern de les Illes Balears, 2015). This paper reviews the latest concerns about the environmental and social impacts of tourism on Mallorca and identifies gaps between the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC, 2014) recommended Environmental Social Governance (ESG) framework and indicators referred to in the Govern de les Illes Balears (2015) Tourism Yearbook. The paper recommends ways in which these gaps can be bridged including which data can be gathered to better inform decisions.
