Summary: | How far the American Academy of Pediatrics and pediatrics as a medical discipline have advanced during the last 75 years is eloquently evidenced in its 75th anniversary meeting, with thousands of attendees and hundreds of speakers, discussing an extraordinarily broad range of scientific, public health, socioeconomic, and governmental issues. Here, Pearson explore how American pediatrics and the academy have evolved and especially some of the social, professional, and scientific forces and personalities that shaped the pediatrics of today. Among other things, the first 75 years were characterized by steady growth that transformed the American Academy of Pediatrics from a small organization of 300 members, largely centered in the Northeast, near-Midwest, and California, into a truly national organization of 60,000 members, 10 national districts, and active chapters in all 50 states. The academy's headquarters expanded from a small office in Evanston to spacious complexes in Elk Grove Village IL and Washington DC with more than 300 full-time staff and literally thousands of pediatrician volunteers. |
