Summary:The stereochemistry of epoxide carbonylation using bimetallic [Lewis acid] [Co(CO) complexes is reported. The achiral complex [(salph)Al(THF) ][Co(CO) ] stereospecifically carbonylates - and -2-butene oxide to the - and -β-lactones, respectively. Preliminary experiments regarding the carbonylative kinetic resolution of racemic -2-butene oxide using the enantiomerically pure complex [( -salcy)Al(THF) ][Co(CO) ] are also reported.
