Summary: | This article argues that there is a hidden connection between the emergence and establishment of the aesthetics of autonomy and the shifting patterns of describing sexual relationships between the sexes around 1800. Aesthetics borrows narratives from the reformed discourse of prostitution and the "love match:" works of art are to be honored for their "inner value." Furthermore, critics of the so-called "reading craze" argue against binge-reading novels from the newly emerging lending libraries (calling them "literary brothels"). They recommend a form of literary monogamy instead: the thorough and repeated lecture of one carefully chosen and cherished work of art. |
