Description
Summary:Studies in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) demonstrate that muscle wasting is associated with loss of function, increased morbidity and mortality. However, the age-related changes in muscle properties - i.e. muscle morphology, strength and power - in older adults with impaired kidney function is not well understood, as these relations have not been evaluated longitudinally or using 3D imaging techniques to assess muscle morphology. Thus, a better understanding of the quadriceps muscle mass and function of older adults with impaired kidney function is needed to improve treatment and prevention strategies that can maintain physical functioning of this high-risk group. This study aimed to determine if lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR < 60 ml/min/1.73 m2) was associated with accelerated worsening over 5 years of quadriceps muscle cross-sectional area (CSA, cm2), attenuation (HU), specific torque - quadriceps torque (N-m) / lean area (cm2) - and maximum rate of torque development (RTD, N*m/s) among older adults with normal and impaired kidney function.
