Summary:An obituary for planetary astronomer Bradford Adelbert Smith, who led the imaging team on the Voyager mission to the outer solar system in the 1980s is presented. He was born on Sept. 22, 1931 in Cambridge MA and graduated from Northeastern University with a BSc in chemical engineering. He and Clyde Tombaugh established a program of systematic, ground-based telescopic imaging of the planets at the New Mexico State University (NMSU) to support the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)'s upcoming robotic planetary missions in 1958.
