Because of continuing budget deficits, few expect to see any expansion of Medicare's long-term care coverage beyond the current restrictive maximum of 100 days spent in a nursing home immediately following hospitalization, or the extremely limited services that can be provided by Medicare-certified home health care agencies. The multifaceted issues of the deepening long-term care crisis present a golden opportunity for society to show resolve and innovation by bringing together the best minds from many affected sectors.
