Description
Summary:In Dante Gabriel Rossetti's sonnet sequence The House of Life as much as in his most famous poem-pictures, the poet-painter orchestrates a dialogue between the sister arts. In this respect, the choice of the sonnet form itself reveals the poet's will to turn the poem into a visual object. Conversely his pictorial style illustrates his belief that "The best picture is a painted poem, " and this essay aims to demonstrate how such a statement applies to various of his pictures such as La Donna della Finestra, Beata Beatrix, or Proserpina. From picture to poem, Rossetti's artistic talent ultimately derives from his ability to cross borders and show that each art aspires to the condition of poetry. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
