Description
Summary:In this work, the effects of the rotating speed, the ball to material ratio and ball-milling time on the mechanical performance of palygorskite filled styrene butadiene rubber composites were intensively investigated through orthogonal experiments, using modified palygorskite powders of different structures and morphologies as reinforcement filler. Furthermore, the influences of the rotating speed of ball mill on the particle size distribution, surface energy, and morphological structure of the powders as well as the performance of filled rubber were analyzed by using frozen section and electron microscopy observation. Results showed that the ball milling regulated powders exhibited the best reinforcing performance when the ball to material ratio was 3:1, the rotating speed was 900 r/min and the ball-milling time was 20 min. The tensile strength of reinforcing rubber was up to 19.73 MPa when the filling amount was 80 phr. Meanwhile, the modified palygorskite powders displayed the best dispersion character, the minimum surface free energy, and the highest polarity component portion value, indicating that the amount of aggregate particles was the key point affecting the filled rubber composites performance. •Factors on nanocomposites mechanical performance were studied by orthogonal methods.•A feasible way to regulate structure of mineral powders was demonstrated.•Frozen section and TEM were adopted to analyze the nanocomposites structure.•The attapulgite/styrene butadiene rubber nanocomposites have great performance.
