Summary:African-American academics, including figures of great distinction, are not immune from standard racial profiling inflicting the indignities of race. In an incident that has become a national obsession, in July 2009, Henry Louis Gates Jr., Fletcher University Professor at Harvard, one of the nation's most celebrated academic scholars, was arrested at his home after a neighbor had placed a call to police believing a break-in was occurring at the house. This article lists several notable black scholars and their various run-ins with the law.
