Summary: | Rationale: Short pauses or "transition periods" between the expiratory and inspiratory periods of subsequent breaths are commonly observed during sleep; but the role of these periods in the regulation of ventilation during challenges such as increased upper-airway resistance has not been investigated. A novel method of dividing each breath into inspiratory (TI), expiratory (TE), and transition (TTrans) periods presents a new analytical challenge for the interpretation of data in individuals and across study populations. |
