Summary: | The death of Nelson Mandela at the end of 2013 occasioned what may have been an unprecedented moment of public reflection and open discourse, the substance of which can only be described as "spiritual" in nature. For two weeks in December, not only did the media in all countries devote constant coverage to memorial events and official statements but also throughout the world people in football stadiums, class-rooms, board meetings, busses, and parliaments paused to remember and express gratitude for the character and contribution of one individual. Mandela exercised a profoundly integrated personal leadership that brought together clear and unswerving principles with a deep and humane pragmatism. |
