Summary: | Simple, approximate, engineering methods of computation are often used for real-time evaluation of radiation conditions due to sources of photon radiation. The main source of errors in calculations of the dose characteristics performed with these methods is incorrectly taking account of the contribution of the scattered photon radiation. Ordinarily, the scattered photon radiation is taken into account by means of dose buildup factors obtained by the method of moments in infinite media with atomic number Z and distance d between a point isotropic source of photons with energy E0 and a detector B(E0, d, Z). However, in most cases the protection must be regarded at least as a barrier, and then it is necessary to know the buildup factors Bbar(E0, d, Z) for the barrier geometry of the protection. The barrier effect of the protection is usually taken into account by introducing a correction . |
