| Summary: | When the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) produced its lengthy declaration entitled "The Future We Want", the challenge was to use the Rio+20 output as a base from which to produce more and better results in achieving the world's most important shared objective -- sustainability. In order for the outcomes of last year's Conference to have the desired impacts then, further action is imperative. It is essential to obtain both buy-in and action from UN Member States, to take the results forward and promote action to achieve them. Although recognised as key outcomes of the Rio+20 Summit, the mandates for establishment of the HLPF and development of the SDGs were expressed rather vaguely by the Rio+20 negotiators and by the UN General Assembly decision adopting these objectives, leaving significant decisions to be made in these initial stages. |
