Summary:This paper aims to explore the emerging forms of violence and their liaison with group identity according to the current mutations of conflicts in the 20th century. The following concepts are to be discussed: nationalistic expressions of violence, the concept of globalization and the anxieties about ethnic identity. Firstly, our task is to examine what happens to group identity in the context of violence and if violence can be caused by a complex configuration of social constructs, including differences and pluralities of identities. Hence, the way in which the dimension of the group identity and self identity is structured varies, serving to rationalize violence against certain groups at the hands of another.
