| Summary: | The 43rd biannual meeting of the Council that governs the Global Environment Facility (GEF) was notable primarily in its focus on tooling up for future progress. To this end, under the chairmanship of co-chairs, Naoko Ishii, and Joao Raimundo Lopes, it considered possible means and mandates to serve as the financial mechanism for the convention on mercury, proposals to streamline the project cycle that applies to GEF-funded work, evaluation reports regarding the GEF's recent activities and strategies, and the GEF's priorities and programme, as well as its Sixth Replenishment process. The meeting also included a meeting relating to the Council's overseeing two GEF-administered funds established under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change: the Least Developed Countries Fund and Special Climate Change Fund. Although the GEF's primary function is financial, emphasising implementation of environmental priorities, it operates through a range of discrete mechanisms.
