Summary: | We have known for many years that early mother-child interactions can have a powerful effect on the child's developing personality, but can such interactions also have an effect on the child's developing intellectual abilities? Does the way a mother talks to an infant or young child, or how much she talks to the child make a difference in his ability to conceptualize? Do mothers who interact more with their infants and children more have brighter children? These and other questions, which should be of interest both to teachers and to parents, are discussed in this paper; the recent research is presented and analyzed, and some of the thorny methodological problems are emphasized. |
