Description
Summary:In the first of two articles analysing the interplay between enterprise restructuring and industrial relations, the author examines the key changes that took place in three highly unionised manufacturing organisations in the United Kingdom, both during the 1979-83 recession and subsequently. All three case studies show managements taking a variety of initiatives to restructure the enterprises and make them more efficient - a process that entailed substantial cutbacks in employment. Collective bargaining was an important vehicle for negotiating change, but there were also instances where it was imposed, and where new policies and practices were introduced with a view to strengthening direct links between management and employees
