Summary: | The author discusses research on the urbanization of the Xhosa-speaking tribes that shows that the Xhosa distinguish between "Red" people, conservative traditionalists adhering to Xhosa custom, and "School" people, already Westernized to a degree and who value many aspects of European material and non-material culture. Dubb presents quantitative data on various characteristics of Redness and Schoolness. On the basis of these data a Red/School scale has been constructed and applied, he explains. The results indicate quite clearly that there does appear to be a strong correlation between actual and ideal patterns, Dubb argues. |
