Description
Summary:This paper takes a critical look at current approaches to the excavation of habitation sites in the Boreal Forest, using examples gained from a decade of actual field research in northwestern Ontario, Canada (Fig.1). Some fallacies regarding site size and stratification are examined in the light of recent evidence; the severe problem of "collapsed stratigraphy" is discussed and possible methodological solutions are proposed; and a specific research design is presented. The reconstruction of social patterning is emphasized through the medium of successful examples of research design and interpretative methodology from Archaic, Middle and Late Woodland cultural components in the study area.
