Summary:Les ambiguïtés qui persistent de nos jours dans la définition de la dénonciation et de la délation ont une longue histoire. Elles remontent aux dictionnaires dits « des mots » qui ont marqué les débuts de la lexicographie française. Les dictionnaires « des choses » ont ensuite approfondi cette analyse. Mais la contribution la plus importante, répercutée dans la grande Encyclopédie, a été apportée par les dictionnaires juridiques. Un regard historique permet de mieux apprécier ces évolutions dans les dictionnaires de la période révolutionnaire. Le contenu idéologique devient alors extrêmement visible et, doublé d'upe approche juridique nouvelle, contribue à une redéfinition de ces concepts. Au nom des valeurs morales et civiques de la république, la plupart des auteurs s'accorderont à bannir la délation tout en encourageant la dénonciation. The confusions surrounding the meaning of denouncing and of informing go back to the first French language dictionaries. Specialized dictionaries (such as legal dictionaries) and encyclopaedic dictionaries threw more light on these words. Some of them extended their influence to the great Encyclopédie which brought the most significant contribution to the definition of these words. This view of the past helps us to better assess the evolving concepts through the French revolution dictionnaries. Their ideological content became then highly visible. In addition, the new legal context has generally led to the redefinition of these concepts on the basis of the moral and civic republican values. Thus, most of their authors agree with banishing the informing and with encouraging the denouncing.
