Description
Summary:Individuals and institutions generate, in the normal development of their activities, various documents which offer a record of their actions and transactions. Proof value is accorded, therefore, to archive built up as a result of this "organical", "natural" process, which vouches for their impartiality and authenticity. Oral sources, isntead, consist mainly of witness accounts and opinions, rarely fixed in their form and content, and bearing apparently tenuous relation with so-called "facts". Some archivists have considered them with reluctancy for this reason. However, in certain societies, oral accounts are the main source of information, an argument presently compounded by the wide role of audiovisual materials in the historical recording of our times. Besides, oral sources are also useful as a complement for traditional documentary records: to fill certain "gaps", to study sparsely documented subjects (private life, affective relations, some social developments, marginal groups, etc.). Archivists must respond nowadays, therefore, to the increasing popularity of these sources despite the various problems (technical, legal, financial, etc.) they pose.
