The Partition Coefficient of14C2H4in Plant Tissue as a Screening Test for Metabolism or Compartmentation of Ethylene

A method is described for the direct measurement of14C2H4in toluene scintillator and for the measurement of toluene-soluble14C accumulated in tissue during14C2H4(0.7-1.0 μ l/l) treatment. Using these methods the partition coefficient for ethylene between air and plant tissues was estimated. Tissues...

Description
Summary:A method is described for the direct measurement of14C2H4in toluene scintillator and for the measurement of toluene-soluble14C accumulated in tissue during14C2H4(0.7-1.0 μ l/l) treatment. Using these methods the partition coefficient for ethylene between air and plant tissues was estimated. Tissues from a substantial proportion of 36 species tested gave partition coefficients significantly higher than that for water (0.11) indicating either the sequestration of14C2H4or the accumulation of toluene-soluble metabolites. Steam-killed tissue gave partition coefficients similar to that of water.
