Der Mangel archäologischer Forschungen im westlichen Hochland von Guatemala ist dafür verantwortlich, daß die chronologische Sequenz bisher ausschließlich auf keramischen Horizontmarkierern beruht, durch deren Überlappen die einzelnen Phasen der Sequenz aber ungenau abgegrenzt bleiben. Vier Radiokarbondaten aus Agua Tibia mit keramischer und sonstiger Befundassoziation erlauben eine exaktere Abgrenzung der Phasen des Spätklassikums und geben außerdem Einblick in die soziokulturelle Komplexität damaliger Siedlungen. Accurate dating of Agua Tibia, and the chronology of the western highland of Guatemala. The lack of archaeological research conducted in the western highland of Guatemala is the reason that determination of the chronological sequence of this area has heretofore been exclusively based on ceramic zone markers. As a result of the overlapping involved here, however, the individual phases of the sequence could be demarcated only with a great deal of inaccuracy. Four radiocarbon datings from Agua Tibia with ceramic and other associated findings allow a more exact delimitation of the phases of the late classic period. They also allow insights into the sociocultural complexity of the settlements of that period.
