Summary: | While carbon black is widely used as the catalyst support material for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), TiO2 has been considered as an alternative material because of its stability under the PEFC operating condition, but TiO2-supported Pt electrocatalysts tend to exhibit lower initial electrochemical properties than the typical Pt/C electrocatalyst. Here, a Pt-decorated porous Ti-based electrode is developed, consisting of Pt nano-catalysts and the porous sheet made of Ti-metal fibers acting as both a catalyst support and a gas diffusion layer (GDL). It is demonstrated that Pt nanoparticles of a few nm in diameter can be homogeneously deposited on the porous Ti sheet, the outermost surface of which is oxidized. Such a carbon-free all-metallic porous electrode structure acting as electrocatalytic layer and GDL exhibits relatively high electrochemical surface area (ECSA) up to 92 m2g-1 for the Pt loading of 0.00108 mgPtcm-2, and can be an all-in-one electrode structure for PEFCs. |
