Summary: | Very high ambient temperatures and the consequent excessive heat build-up can cause outdoor IEC digital energy meters to malfunction, in spite of being mounted in protective enclosures. This paper presents a method for assessing the design adequacy of fiber-glass reinforced plastic protective enclosures for outdoor IEC energy meters operating in extremely hot weather conditions. Study results indicate the need for electric utilities to strengthen their protective enclosures material specifications and adopt more rigorous type-testing procedures. |
