Description
Summary:This paper presents a three-level cascade algorithm for estimating and compensating platform motion errors during synthetic aperture sonar imaging. By using a multiple element receiving array, physical aperture images can be produced from each transmit burst. With proper spatial sampling, there is sufficient redundancy in successive physical aperture images to extract motion parameters that can be applied to the image data to fully realize the improved resolution capability of synthetic aperture techniques. Since this algorithm is based on autofocus techniques, changes in the medium during synthetic aperture formation are inherently corrected as well. In addition, this algorithm is compared to two motion estimation and compensation techniques used in synthetic aperture radar imaging.< >
