Description
Summary:This paper draws upon Alfred Korzybski's distinction between extensional and intensional orientations to reveal how time-binding relates to wealth, economics, and politics. As economic concerns and sensibilities inform a good deal of political thought, the paper shows how the phenomenon of wealth-and in particular the rise of superabundance-warrants careful examination and also how general semantics provides needed resources for thinking about these issue. "Wealth," understood within GS, provides an exemplar of uniquely human properties that emerge only with the time-binding class of life. By tracing the intricate connections between time-binding and wealth creation, this paper engages in thoroughgoing re-evaluation of self-understanding, and therein, it opens new vistas for thinking about contemporary political divisions and social problems.
