Description
Summary:This article describes the sociocultural dynamics associated with food consumption in farming families from Coto Brus County (Puntarenas province, Costa Rica), which emerged from a larger study called , which started from the systemic theory for the understanding of food and nutritional security. Data collection was carried out in 2015, with a sample of 34 families (17 families linked to the local inter- institutional project and 17 families not linked to the project). The number of families was determined considering the existent financial and human resources. The sampling method of the families linked to the project was randomly stratified, seeking representatives by district. The families not involved in the project were those neighboring farming families with similar characteristics to the families participating in the project. Two techniques were used for data collection: semi-structured oriented interview and participant observation. The practices of food consumption were observed as well as the manifestations of sociability in which food is part of both the family and its community. To facilitate the process of transcription and coding of the data the Nvivo 10 software was used. Main findings revealed four fundamental aspects related to the production and feeding of families: i) the hierarchy of productive activities and food preparation; ii) self-consumption of food; iii) reciprocity practices; and, vi) the role of women in family feeding.
