Summary: | The developmental process for an airfoil designed to be used on long-range transonic transport aircraft with large regions of natural laminar flow is described. Components of the development process that are discussed include mission-driven needs criteria, airfoil design method, experimental airfoil validation, and a variety of numerical validation procedures. Numerical analyses include flowfield prediction, boundary layer stability analysis and transition prediction, and force and moment assessment. Assessments are made at several off-design conditions. The overall goal is to develop and demonstrate the computational tools and analytical methods required for the optimal design of unconventional airfoils and wings for global range cruise flight.
