Summary:Analysis of data from more than 21,000 soldiers measured in U.S. military anthropometric surveys since 1966 indicates that 0.47% exceed the upper limits of fit for the size Large PASGT helmet in one or more head dimensions. Although this frequency is relatively low, it suggests that at least 3,650 individuals in the active duty Army may be disaccommodated by the current PaSGT sizing system, and that a size Extra-Large helmet will be needed if all soldiers must be fit within the system. Several alternative methods for deriving the dimensional attributes of an Extra-Large helmet are discussed in this report, and a 6.3-mm (0.25 in) radial expansion of the existing size Large headform is recommended for developing the size Extra-Large helmet. Radial expansion was chosen in order to maintain the current shape of the PASGT helmet headform and to minimize the added weight due to the helmet size increase. The proposed Extra-Large limits of fit will accommodate the largest known individuals from the 1988 anthropometric survey as well as all prior military surveys.
