Summary:The use of infrared (IR) guidance in high-performance, endoatmospheric missiles requires basic research and technology development to ensure survival adequate performance in the high-temperature environment of high-speed flight. This technology program combines development of both an analytical and an experimental capability to answer fundamental feasibility questions, to gather basic data, and to develop the capability to evaluate performance overall flight regimes. This test plan describes the experimental work to be conducted during 1985. Included are descriptions of the principal test facility, measurement instrumentation, and data recording used in the program. Aerothermal and optical performance measurements will be made on a test article (model) with and uncooled, hemisherical window. Mach 5 flow and heat-transfer rates representative of flight speeds from Mach 5 to Mach 6.5 and altitudes from 50,000 to 100,000 ft will be used. Test conditions, measurements, and data reporting are described.
